2002 ACTIVITY REPORT
2002 Annual Meeting Activities
Twenty people attended the
Committee meeting held on January 14, 2002 in the Hilton Hotel, Washington
DC. The following subcommittee reports
were given: Secretary, Steering,
Research, Newsletter, Annual Meeting, and Summer Meeting. Membership status was discussed since
membership terms expired in 2003. Connie
Hill provided an update on Brownfields and waste management issues in
FHWA. Jason Harrington provided an
update on the FHWA Recycling Team. Tom
Abdallah provided an informal presentation regarding the current ISO system in
place at NYCT. One paper was held during
the annual meeting.
Transportation Environmental Research Needs Conference
Seven committee members
participated in the Waste Management (Recycling, Waste Reduction, Pollution
Prevention, Brownfields) Group at the Transportation Environmental Research
Needs Conference held in Washington, DC in March 2002. Some committee members participated in other
work groups at the conference. The Waste
Management Group generated seven research needs statements pertaining to topics
such as environmental management systems, sustainable design, greening the
procurement process, cost benefit analysis model, acceptance of recycled
materials, and best management practices relating to de-icing operations and
resulting contamination.
2002 Summer Meeting Activities
Fifty-two people attended the summer meeting held in Helena,
Montana. Twenty-four people attended the
committee meeting. Items discussed at
the meeting included: membership, Work
Plan and Strategic Plan, 2003 Annual Meeting, 2003 Summer Meeting, Committee
Name and Scope, committee website, and the Environmental Research Needs
Conference.
Membership
There are currently 24 Committee
members representing state and federal transportation agencies, consultants,
research councils, and universities.
One-third of the committee members are expected to rotate off the
committee in 2003. There are over 50
Friends of the Committee.
Triennial Evaluation
The Triennial evaluation was submitted in spring
2002. To date, no comments have been
received regarding the evaluation.
Strategic Planning
The Committee Work Plan has been
updated for 2003. The Work Plan contains
detailed information regarding assignments, due dates, internal and external
communications, and Committee activities relevant to and planned for 2003. Items covered in the plan include Committee
membership, TRB research, technology transfer, Committee sponsored
papers/conferences/workshops, communications, liaison with other TRB committees
and stakeholder groups, and Committee direction.
Other Items
Planning for the 2003 Mid-Year
Workshop to be held in Portsmouth, New began in summer 2002. The workshop is being hosted by the Recycled
Materials Resource Center at the University of New Hampshire.
