A1FO7 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

SUMMER MEETING 2001

KEY WEST, FLORIDA

Opening

Ø      Chair Bob Tatman called the meeting to order and welcomed the members to Key West

TRB Staff Report

Ø      Jon Williams of TRB presented an update for the committee membership.

Ø      Look for the Proceedings of last summer’s meeting in Pittsburgh celebrating the millennium

Ø      The TRB Annual Meeting in 2002 be on January 13th through the 17th   Most of the environmental sessions will be held in the Hilton Hotel, similar to years past.  The hard deadline for peer–reviewed papers is August 1st.

Ø      TRB is sponsoring another “Environmental Needs Conference” in Washington, D.C. in March of 2002.

Subcommittee Reports

          Steering Subcommittee

Ø      Scott Springer presented an update on the Steering Subcommittee activities

Ø      Request for assistance: there needs to be fresh/new input on the Committee Activity Plan for 2002.

Ø      The Committee membership needs to continue to involve (and promote the involvement of) Friends of the Committee.

Ø     There is one slot open on the Committee.  B. Tatman and J. Berry are working to obtain someone from the U.S. EPA to join the Committee.

          Research Needs Subcommittee

Ø      B. Tatman presented an update on the Research Needs Subcommittee activities

Ø      Encouraged the committee membership to work to update the Research Circular Update on environmental research needs.  Viewed as the most important short-term effort for the Committee.

Ø      This committee’s track record was solid as one of our topics included in the circular was funded

Ø      We should be looking at cutting edge/emerging topics such as the use of recycled materials

Ø      We have multiple references to guide our efforts in defining research needs such as:

o       List of existing research

o       List of research needs

Ø      One idea worthy of consideration: Water quality of runoff off of recycled materials in transportation infrastructure

Ø      Schedule: Forward list of research needs ideas to B. Tatman by September 1, 2001

Ø      Michael Fitch will send preliminary research needs ideas to the Committee membership and will post on our web site.

          Newsletter Subcommittee

Ø      The last newsletter was very difficult to assemble due to nominal responsiveness.  We need to take a fresh look at how we produce the newsletter

Ø      B. Tatman presented these thoughts/recommendations:

o       Set dates for future newsletters for August 1st and February 1st of each year, corresponding to the month immediately following our Committee meetings

o       Prepare and send a letter to the Friends of the Committee for their input

o       Request input from other organizations (e.g., U.S. EPA, FHWA) that should have interest in communicating with the transportation sector

o       Look at Comparative Technologies web site as it could be a good source of technical articles for the Newsletter

Ø      B. Tatman will issue a general request for input on Newsletter per his recommendations and will explore available support for using our web page in lieu of our hardcopy approach

          Annual Meeting Subcommittee

Ø      Call for papers is out.  Forward to others as appropriate.  Deadline for papers is August 1, 2001.

Ø      The theme for this year is “Waste Management Challenges in the Transportation Industry”

Ø      There have been no responses from the Committee membership yet – a call went out to transportation agencies.

Ø      We are sponsoring a poster session this year.  The theme is “How can we more effectively recycle materials?”  Need 8 to 10 posters to make this work.

Ø      Papers can be either peer-reviewed or non peer-reviewed.

          Summer Meeting 2002 Subcommittee

Ø      Cora Helm has bids for 2 potential meeting places in Helena

Ø      A field trip is being arranged at a Superfund site

Ø      Dates for the Summer Workshop are July 15-18, 2002

Ø      ASHTTO has a meeting in the middle of July, 2002 and this may prove to be a problem regarding attendance at our workshop.  Need to focus on getting people from the west to attend our workshop

Discussions

          Committee Specialist Matrix

Ø      The Committee membership needs to fill out the matrix presenting our individual technical and management expertise

          Sponsorship of HazMat Training

Ø      FHWA is sponsoring a 1 to 3 day training session for hazardous materials management
