ADC60 Research Resources

TRB's varied activities annually draw on more than 5,000 engineers, scientists, and other transportation researchers and pract

TRB's varied activities annually draw on more than 5,000 engineers, scientists, and other transportation researchers and practitioners from the public and private sectors and academia, all of whom contribute their expertise in the public interest by participating on TRB committees, panels, and task forces. The program is supported by state transportation departments, the various administrations of the U.S. Department of Transportation and other federal agencies, industry associations, and other organizations and individuals interested in the development of transportation.

TRB Committee ADC60 shares the latest knowledge, expertise, and experience in development and integration of proactive environmental management systems and sustainability concepts into transportation programs in the industry's evolution from a solid and hazardous waste remediation and management approach to a resource efficiency approach. The committee focuses on systems-based solutions and research associated with resource efficiency-and contamination-related technical areas such as toxic and hazardous materials tracking, pollution prevention, product substitution and green designs, recycling and reuse of materials, advances in environmental site assessment technologies and methodologies, and brownfields programs.

The literature and results of the research that is being conducted are spread out across different agencies, organization and institutions. In an effort to centralize some of this literature that is available on the web, the following list and links have been compiled. With easier access to this literature, researchers, consultants or regulators can make use of the information provided.

Research Links:

Transportation Research Board (TRB)

TRB's Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) system is now freely available as TRIS Online at http://ntl.bts.gov/tris/ and Research in Progress can be found at http://rip.trb.org/search/.

Research findings are published in the NCHRP Reports series and the NCHRP Synthesis of Highway Practice series. The reporting format is designed specifically to accommodate the transportation administrator and practicing engineer. In addition, to provide the earliest possible awareness and use of the research findings, NCHRP Research Results Digests and NCHRP Legal Research Digests are issued as warranted. All of these reports are available at the TRB Bookstore. Copies of all published reports are issued to the chief administrative officer of each highway and transportation department and widely within TRB circles.

International Transport Research Documents (ITRD)

http://www.itrd.org/

The ITRD database reflects the transport research literature of 23 countries including most of the European countries, Australia, Latin America, Canada, China, and Japan. It also includes abstracts of transport literature published by other organizations/associations such as the US Transportation Research Board (TRB), the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT) and the World Road Association (PIARC).

Each record contains an informative abstract in one of the four official ITRD languages represented in the database: English, French, German and Spanish. The ITRD quadric-lingual thesaurus allows searching by the term code which is the same whatever the language of abstract.

Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials (ASTSWMO) Publication Catalogue

http://www.astswmo.org/

The ASTSWMO is an organization supporting the environmental agencies of the States and trust territories. ASTSWMO focuses on the needs of State hazardous waste programs; non-hazardous municipal solid waste and industrial waste programs; recycling, waste minimization, and reduction programs; Superfund and State cleanup programs; waste management and cleanup activities at federal facilities, and underground storage tank and leaking underground storage tank programs.

American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)

http://www.transportation.org/

AASHTO is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing highway and transportation departments in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. It represents all five transportation modes: air, highways, public transportation, rail, and water. Its primary goal is to foster the development, operation, and maintenance of an integrated national transportation system.

AASHTO Center for Environmental Excellence:

http://environment.transportation.org/

The AASHTO Center for Environmental Excellence has been developed in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration to promote environmental stewardship and to encourage innovative ways to streamline the transportation delivery process. The Center is designed to serve as a resource for transportation professionals seeking technical assistance, training, information exchange, partnership-building opportunities, and quick and easy access to environmental tools.

Recycled Materials Resource Center (RMRC)

http://www.rmrc.unh.edu/default.asp

Mission Statement

-To systematically test, evaluate, develop appropriate guidelines for and demonstrate environmentally acceptable increased use of recycled materials in transportation infrastructure construction and maintenance,

-To make information available to State transportation departments, the Federal Highway Administration, the construction industry, and other interested parties,

-To encourage the increased use of recycled materials by using sound science to analyze potential long-term considerations that affect the physical and environmental performance, and

-To work cooperatively with Federal and State officials to reduce the institutional barriers that limit widespread use recycled materials and to ensure that such increased use is consistent with the sustained environmental and physical integrity. The Center has a special interest in the long-term physical and environmental consequences of recycled material use.

Focus areas:

· (i) testing and evaluation guidelines and specifications;

· (ii) material specific research and development;

· (iii) economics of secondary materials;

· (iv) new materials and innovative technologies;

· (v) field trials of secondary materials;

· (vi) technical services; and

· (vii) technology deployment and delivery, and training.

Fifteen research projects have been completed to date. A completed research project is one where all the research, reports and end products have been finished and accepted by the RMRC. Once a project is finished, the RMRC Outreach Program focuses on dissemination of the project results and products through the RMRC website, newsletter, conferences, and workshops. Most of the results and products from the completed projects can be downloaded from the RMRC website.
