Duties/Qualifications:
VDOT seeks a qualified individual to fill the challenging
position of Hazardous Materials Compliance Engineer located in
the Hazardous Materials Section. Selected candidate will develop & manage
a program to assess environmental compliance at the Department’s maintenance
& equipment facilities; & provide technical guidance & assistance
to facilitate compliance w/state & federal hazardous
materials/waste/substance laws & regulations. Successful candidate will establish clear
policies/procedures relating to both the proper management of hazardous
materials/wastes/ substances & the response actions necessary to
mitigate/remediate any contamination from releases. The candidate will also be responsible for
providing technical & regulatory expertise to support VDOT staff in
matters relating to highway construction/ maintenance & capital
improvement projects. Anticipated max salary is approximately $70,000. Requirements: Knowledge & experience in
hazardous materials/wastes/ substances-related laws & regulations;
demonstrated work experience in the waste characterization & waste
management; experience in development, implementation & analysis of
environmental investigations & remediation strategies; & an
understanding of environmental auditing/ environmental management systems.
Candidates should possess skills in planning, analysis, reasoning,
negotiations, & organization.
Candidates should have the ability to independently oversee various
program operations & provide technical support consistent with legal
& regulatory requirements; interpret technical data; communicate
orally/in writing with diverse groups statewide; & manage multiple
technical projects/issues. BS/BA
degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology,
Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Civil Engineering preferred. Forty-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training. Valid VA Driver’s License. Moving & Relocation assistance may be
available to selected candidate.

the salary range for this position will be $39,384 - $80,829.
